Creating Positive Relationships (CPR®) seeks to shape attitudes and increase knowledge about one of the most difficult issues in adolescent life; sexuality. This program, now taught and facilitated by Tanari Trust in Kenya, comes with age appropriate curricula for ages 11-21.
Not to be confused with the lifesaving first aid technique called Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, the Creating Positive Relationships program could also save the lives of your teenagers by helping them build healthy futures. CPR® promotes the best standard of sex education among our youth.

Your youth will be taught that abstinence from sexual activity before marriage is both biblical and preferred for the physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual health of the individual.

Using accurate information, creative demonstrations, videos, guest speakers and interactive discussions, adolescents are involved in learning the value of self control in a way that helps them resist the peer and societal pressures of today.
Tanari Trust also makes presentations to parents so that they are aware of, and can be better placed to support what their teens are taught in CPR®.
CPR® does not promote birth control methods in addition to its abstinence teaching.
Why teach about sexuality to Kenyan adolescents?
The transition to adulthood is fraught with many challenges. Lack of positive sources of information, negative peer pressure and media influence have contributed to uninformed choices by our youth with devastating consequences. These include early sexual debut, early childbearing, underage marital unions, HIV/AIDS and other STIs which serve to comprise their future. We need more than ever before to invest in young people with education that teaches them how to handle their sexuality, and in communities that support healthy behavior.

Today’s teens report that most of their information on sexuality comes     from the media and their peers. Can we trust these sources?
The mean age at first sex is 14 years for girls and 13 years for boys.
Most messages on sexuality in our media focus on just the physical    dimension of sexuality. Teens need to be taught how their sexuality    affects the whole person.
1 out of 10 teenage girls between the ages of 15-19 years gives birth    every year.
Sexual attitudes and behaviour reflected by the prevailing sexual violence    in Kenya is largely a result of attitudes cultivated during adolescence.
The Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2003 reports that 8 out of 10    young people have had sex by the age of 20 years.
Teenagers fall into what is called ‘the age of opportunity. Delayed sexual    debut is crucial to eliminating HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
50% of all new HIV infections occur among youth aged 15-24 years.
1 out of 10 young people aged 15-24 years is infected with an STI other    than HIV.
Only 35% of girls and 47% of boys aged 16-20 year are still in school.

We can bring CPR® to your community in several contexts:
Schools: The CPR® curriculum is perfect for the school set up. It can be taught in five lessons, in a format that best suits the specific school. Some schools have given one hour every day over one week, while others have opted to give one lesson a week, through the course of a month.
Churches and other communities where there are youth groups: Each age appropriate course can be taught at regular weekly meetings over a period of a month (4-5 weeks). Each class takes about one hour. It can also be taught at a two-day retreat setting.
Training your own youth workers to teach CPR®: We believe that the best-placed instructors are those who are already in the community and know the needs and the character of the youth. Tanari Trust regularly provides Training of Trainers (CPR® TOT or TOC) opportunities for such instructors and will follow up with full logistical support to help them impact their own communities.
Here’s what Students are saying…
Before the CPR® training, I did not know that the TV programs I watch and the music I listen too can influence me to get sexually involved. I have since learnt to choose what I watch and listen to so as to reach my goal of abstinence until marriage.
(17-year-old girl)
The CPR® training helped me see that when I engage in sex, it will affect my whole person-the emotional, mental, social and spiritual.
(16-year-old girl)
The CPR® classes helped me realize that low self-esteem and peer pressure can set one up to getting involved sexually.
(15-year-old boy)
I learnt that my sexuality is a gift worth respecting and protecting for my future spouse
(13-year-old girl)
The modes of teaching-the videos and demonstrations make one see the reality of the effects of sexual involvement before marriage.

Tanari Trust’s CPR® course is a very useful program for teenagers. This course helps young people to understand their sexuality and be able to make wise decision of abstaining sexually…the CPR® course talks about wholesome relationships, not just physical ones, but also the emotional, social, mental and spiritual in abstinence.

The results of Tanari Trust’s programs are evident on the youth as they have gone on to become active and responsible members of the congregation…I believe that CPR® is providing a very helpful model that will significantly impact our ability to tackle contemporary challenges concerning youth sexuality.
